New Trash & Recycling Option

Veolia has approached the Town Board with a new trash and recycling option. You may have noticed neighboring communities with larger, wheeled trash and recycling bins. A sample bin is available at the Town Hall for viewing. These bins would be owned and maintained by Veolia. The Board welcomes comments using the Comment Form available here.

No Spring Primary Election for Town of Trenton

The Town of Trenton will not have an election on February 21. The Spring Primary in Wisconsin is to narrow the field for non-partisan local officials. The Town has no such offices needing a primary in 2012.

Radon is the Leading Cause of Lung Cancer in Non-Smokers

The Washington County Health Department encourages all residents to test their homes for radon. Testing your home for radon is easy and inexpensive. Tests are available for purchase for $6.00 each at the Health Department, 333 E Washington St., Suite 1100, West Bend, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM. Anyone wishing to have a kit mailed to them can send a check for $10.00 to the Washington County Health Department, PO Box 2003, West Bend WI 53095. (Make the check out to the Washington County Health Department). Kit analysis is at no charge. The only additional cost is for 4 postage stamps to mail the kit in for analysis. The Washington County Health Department wants residents to know that removing lead based paint (and varnish) from interior and exterior surfaces in homes built prior to 1978 can cause lead poisoning if not done with extreme caution. Lead is a highly toxic metal that at one time was an ingredient in many household products, including lead-based paints manufactured before 1978. The primary source of lead exposure among U.S. children is the lead-based paint (and varnish) and lead-contaminated dust and soil found in and around older buildings. As of April, 2010, a new law, Wisconsin Lead-Safe Renovation Rule, requires certification of renovators/contractors that disturb lead-based paint in homes, child care facilities, and schools built before 1978. Certified contractors follow specific work practices that prevent lead contamination of surfaces in the buildings they are renovating. If your contractor is not certified and does not follow lead-safe renovation practices, he/she may be putting your family and pets at risk for lead poisoning. A homeowner doing work on his/her own property does not have to be certified but would be wise to follow lead-safe practices. Children are particularly susceptible to lead poisoning, suffering permanent damage that may stay with them for the rest of their lives. Private well water should be tested annually for bacteria and nitrate and any time there is a change in taste, odor, color or clarity. Babies under 6 months of age and pregnant women should not drink water containing high nitrate (10 PPM or higher) because it can cause miscarriages and can severely reduce a fetus’ or baby’s ability to carry oxygen in the blood. Your doctor or dentist will want to know the fluoride level in your well so that they can prescribe fluoride supplements for your children.
